You Are a Stylist Now, But Your Mom Was Your OG Stylist

Mom knows best. It was true when we were little girls trying to sit still while our moms braided our hair or brushed it out after a trip to the pool. And it is still true today while we are the ones standing behind the chair and making someone else’s hair more beautiful. Some of us had moms who were stylists, and some of us did not. But no matter what our moms did in the office or in our homes, they always had time to help us look our best. These are the kind of lessons that stick with us, and Mother’s Day is a great time to remind ourselves of all the important things our moms have done for us! Where would we be without her beautiful example and ideas for a beautiful head of hair?

1. Understand your own hair texture

All hair is not created equal, and mom always taught us to love the hair we have and not worry about the hair we wish we had. Depending on the texture and thickness, she knew we had to embrace reality so we could make the most of our beautiful tresses. Thin hair needs a whole different beauty regime than thick hair. These days, we love the Platform Titanium Sleek Pro Styler, which helps us make the most for our clients who have especially stubborn or thick hair.

2. You should always use a heat protectant

We had lots of fun throughout our lives with our moms blow drying, straightening, or curling our hair.  But one thing mom always insisted on was that we take care to protect our locks from the damage caused by all the heat we were using. We took that lesson with us into our jobs as stylists. This thermal foam is what we recommend to customers because it is weightless, protective, and able to be evenly applied. It also reduces drying time, which our moms always appreciated, and so do our clients!

3. Hair will grow back so be willing to experiment

Our moms always had our backs when it came time to experiment with styles, colors, and cuts. (Unless you count that time we cut our brother’s bangs with child safety scissors!) Now we have the privilege of experimenting with cuts and colors for our clients. And don’t worry clients, mom was right. Experiment with your hair to build your style and your confidence. If for some reason you don’t love it, it will grow back sooner rather than later.

 4. Understand how to operate your hairspray

From our earliest memory, mom taught us the right way to use hairspray. So many people get too close for comfort with their hairspray, and end up looking like they are wearing a helmet. Now we can teach people to hold the hairspray 6-8 inches away from their face for a more natural look. Mom also wisely advised that using hairspray will add texture and fullness. This light-hold hairspray will do both for our clients and make them feel like a million bucks without any heaviness or white flakes.

5. Use a great hair brush

Mom always said that you get what you pay for. Of all the tools in your arsenal, using a hair brush that is right for the job will be one of the smartest decisions you can make, and will affect the way your hair looks throughout the day. She was right. Cheap hair brushes make your hair look frizzy and untamed. Lately we have been advising our clients to use this Blowout Ceramic Boar Bristle Brush to create a fantastic blowout and cut down on the static.

6. Color like you mean it

There is a rainbow of color waiting for your hair, and coloring your hair is a great way to build confidence and make you feel your best. This goes along with our mom’s interest and excitement in experimenting with color. But she also told us that if things were worth doing, they were worth doing right. If our clients want to color their hair we are all for it, but we will advise them to protect their tresses with this fabulous Neo Bondtreatment that will nourish and save their hair from the dry, brittle problems that can arise with color treatments.

6. Wear a smile!

No matter what your hair looks like on any given day, or how the cards are stacked or not stacked in your favor, leave the house with a cup of confidence and a smile on your face. If mom taught us anything, it was this: attitude is everything and a smile goes a long way.  Now, adding a great looking hairstyle to your smile is a victory any day, and we know just how to create that for you too!

Covid anxiety has been running rampant across the country, especially in a profession such as yours that works so closely with the public. Add to that the pressure and worry you have been under for the past 18 months of wading through the pandemic and figuring out the “new normal”, and it is (beyond) time for a brain reboot. With long days on your feet, working your hand and arm muscles so hard they sometimes develop carpal tunnel, the creative demands of fashioning the perfect cut and style, and dealing with clientele who are not always sugar and spice and everything nice, even the rigor of your normal workday requires a brain reboot!
